No fruit flies found

10 November 2022

We’re now in the 2022/23 high-risk season for unwanted fruit flies and the latest risk update for this pest is now available on the KVH website.

During September, the first month of the high-risk season, there were fortunately no detections of fruit flies or larvae.

That's no reason to let our guard down though - after several years of fruit fly elimination efforts, our nearest neighbours still have restrictions in place across many areas in South Australia and will remain so until after Christmas.

The most likely way that fruit flies can arrive in New Zealand is in infested fresh fruit and vegetables. It is often difficult to spot adult fruit flies on fruit trees; the better option is to look out for any larvae in fruit. Report any finds or anything else unusual to either Biosecurity New Zealand on 0800 80 99 66 or KVH on 0800 665 825.
