Biosecurity matters

Staying vigilant about biosecurity is essential. Below are a few recent stories - both local and international - that highlight why these behaviours matter and how connected efforts can help us respond to emerging threats:

  • Aussie homeowners are urged to act now as invasive pest overruns suburbs: Rabbits now inhabit two-thirds of the country, costing $197 million in lost agricultural productivity a year, and they’re invading backyards too.
  • New in-flight video playing soon: International air passengers arriving in New Zealand should soon start seeing an updated biosecurity video, reminding travellers to declare or dispose risk items. The current video has been playing on international flights since 2019 and is viewed by more than six million passengers each year.
  • Growers brace for borer beetle: As the Western Australian government turns its focus to shot-hole borer surveillance in outer-metropolitan areas, fruit growers in the state say they are becoming increasingly nervous about the invasive beetle finding its way to the regions.
