Seen something unusual? MAKE A REPORT
Last month, KVH joined growers, industry teams, and long-time colleagues in celebrating the remarkable career of Cathy McKenna, whose contributions to the kiwifruit industry span more than 40 years.
As team leader and kiwifruit entomologist at Plant & Food Research Te Puke, Cathy has been a passionate innovator and collaborator across both the science and grower communities. Her early work helped shape the Kiwigreen programme, supporting both conventional and organic growers in maintaining access to key export markets. In 2021, Cathy received the Kiwifruit Innovation Award for her development of an effective armoured scale insect management programme for Gold3 kiwifruit, ensuring reliable supply by reducing pest impact. Her work has always focused on practical, science-based solutions that support grower profitability.
Cathy also played a pivotal role in biosecurity, advancing cold disinfestation protocols to manage potential fruit fly incursions. She was a trusted voice at the end of the phone, helping identify and respond to new or puzzling pest enquiries from across the sector.
On behalf of New Zealand’s kiwifruit growers, KVH extends heartfelt thanks to Cathy for her dedication and expertise. We wish her all the very best for the next chapter.
