Seen something unusual? MAKE A REPORT
When sourcing plants this winter growers and nurseries supplying plants are reminded to keep an eye out for nematodes, and not supply plants with root knot nematode symptoms.
Root knot nematodes feed off plant roots, damaging the root system and decreasing the vines nutrient and water use efficiency. Affected plants may produce above ground symptoms such as stunted growth and the appearance of water stress; and below ground may have the presence of swelling or knots on the roots.
As part of the Kiwifruit Plant Certification Scheme (KPCS) nurseries monitor for the presence of nematodes during the production and dispatch process to provide growers with the best start for their new plants. Nurseries, or growers receiving nursery plants are reminded to give KVH a call on 0800 665 825 if you suspect the presence of nematodes in nursery plants.
Growers observing poorer growth in their vines, particularly those growing in coarse or sandy soils, may also want to inspect roots nematodes and contact KVH for diagnostics to better understand what may be causing the issues.
KVH investigates reports of unusual symptoms to identify and manage any biosecurity risks.
