Winter stink bug reminders

Another winter campaign asking New Zealanders to look out for Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) has wrapped up.

Because BMSB likes to gather in enclosed spaces over the winter months, the campaign ads mostly targeted people doing indoor activities such as renovation projects. Other audiences were importers, online shoppers, and home gardeners.

Digital/online ads ran for six weeks from mid-May through to the end of June on Google, YouTube, mobile devices and the MetService website. The message was simple: anyone who thinks they have seen a stink bug should catch it, photograph it, and call the pest hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

There were six notifications of possible BMSB sightings to the hotline during the campaign. No live bugs were found but some dead BMSB were confirmed in imported oak timber that arrived in Canterbury from the USA.
